Major Life & Investing Changes Ahead
A few years ago, I took one of the biggest steps of my life — buying a house with my ex. At the time, it felt like the perfect move: a shared dream, our own place, and a sense of stability for the future. We spent months decorating, planning, and imagining what life would look like there.
But as life often does, things changed. Our paths slowly drifted apart, and eventually, we made the difficult decision to go our separate ways. It wasn’t easy — emotionally or financially — but it taught me a lot about resilience and what truly matters.
Now, that chapter is closing as the house is finally being sold. The timing couldn’t be better; the market is strong, and I’ll be walking away with a solid profit. Instead of letting that money sit idle, I’m planning to reinvest a portion of it into my FIRE journey — transforming what once felt like an ending into a new beginning toward financial freedom.
What numbers to expect?
The numbers:
So here’s the financial side of it. We originally bought the house for €220,000, and it’s now listed for €269,000. Over the years, we’ve also paid off around €15,000 on the mortgage.
That means the total equity comes down to roughly €64,000 (€269,000 – €220,000 + €15,000). Since the house was owned 50/50, my share of that profit will be around €32,000 once the sale goes through.
My plan is to invest about half of that amount — roughly €16,000 — into the stock market. I haven’t fully decided how I’ll split it yet. Part of me wants to take a small position in Occidental Petroleum (OXY), which I talked about in my previous blog post, but I’ll also be adding to some of my existing investments to strengthen my portfolio.
It feels exciting — turning something as emotional as selling a house into new financial momentum for my FIRE journey. Sometimes life has a funny way of closing one door just to open another. What once felt like an ending is now an opportunity to grow, reinvest, and move closer to true financial independence.
